A SLOW Food guide to Australia will enable consumers to support ’small, slow food’ farmers, chefs, farmers’ markets and independent retailers producing, using and stocking good, clean and fair food.

Slow Food Australia expects that the guide will become a ready-reference for consumers wanting information about artisan producers, their foods and seasonality, and for chefs and grocers.

Slow Food Perth co-leader Pauline Tresise says the directory is based on Osterie d’Italia – a directory to Italy’s family-run restaurants – and The Slow Food Guide to New York City.

‘The need for a directory came home to us at Feast Perth in March 2007 during a public discussion panel which included Star Anise chef David Croomer,’ Pauline says.

‘One of the panellists referred to the availability of artisan-made sheep’s cheese from Nannup and David remarked that he was completely unaware of it. As one of Slow Food’s principal aims is to link producers with consumers and chefs, we put a proposal for a guide to Slow Food Australia. The guide will provide chefs like David and consumers with ready information about the source of the best good, clean and fair local foods.’

A publisher for A Slow Food guide to Australia was secured in 2007.
