What our petitioners think

petition-on-line-calfweb-raw-milk-cheese-front1WHAT Australians are saying about Slow Food’s Australian raw milk cheese campaign…

  • Live milk from cows – and goats and sheep – is a breathtakingly multi-dimensional liquid of fundamental dietary importance. The real offence is to pass off the dead, unidentified, untraceable, homogeneous, industrial, monotonous, cold white liquid sold to us in shops as ‘milk’. TMT, New Norfolk, Tasmania
  • Great news! Australia needs to bring back more naturally-produced products and sell them in local produce markets, not just once-a-month farmers’ markets. Europe is the greatest example – we grow wonderful food but are forced to shop in supermarkets. Bring back the taste! RT, Kurmond, NSW
  • I want proper cheese! TW, Melbourne, Victoria
  • A label stating the source as raw milk or similar wording will allow everone the choice to buy or not.It is a personal decision, not one requiring government legislation. SA-W, Redesdale, Victoria
  • Our cheeses will taste a lot better. GG, Surrey Hills, Victoria
  • This is an important issue in a world where we are risking the loss of so much that adds quality and diversity to our lives. PH, Fremantle, Western Australia
  • It is preposterous that any government should prevent the making of a natural food product, a product that has been made elsewhere for centuries, yet licence products that are de-natured, highly processed, with chemical additions. This is wrong and I will vote against the party that will not undertake to reverse the ban on raw milk cheese production in Australia. IM, Ivanhoe, Victoria
  • I am Australian, living in Singapore, French-born…I am missing the true flavour of real cheese. My parents eat non-fermented every day and are healthier than anyone. What do Australians enjoy most when visiting France…cheese and wine. J-LF, Singapore
  • With modern hygiene applied in animal keeping cheese making process I have no issues with raw milk products from biodynamic cows. The nutritional make-up of these is superior to pasteurised products. So is the flavour. SG, Flaxton, Queensland
  • Master cheesemakers have been trying for 15 to 20 years to have the right to make cheeses in the traditional and time-honoured method. Why is it a problem in Australia??? European countries do it all the time with raw milk… because the flavour and quality of the cheese is enhanced. Over-regulation of all our lives is ridiculous and breeds an infantile society which cannot take responsibility for its actions. Give people the right to decide for themselves… If someone does not want to eat cheese made from raw milk, then that is their decision to eat it or not, or to provide it for their families. MF, Leura, NSW
  • Australians are also being denied the possibility to develop great business opportunities by the restriction of types of milk and cheeses available in the market place. Why stifle enterprise by narrow-minded bureacracy! CS, Bayswater, WA
  • I am a raw milk advocate and my right to choose should not be ignored. DB, Crows Nest, Queensland
  • Go the raw stink, Aussie-style, I say! MW-S, Adelaide, South Australia
  • Nature is science at its best – we need to embrace our natural and health-giving foods and not deem to know best by killing and polluting them. Allowing the production and sale of raw (milk) cheese is a good beginning. SU, Mooloolaba, Queensland
  • We need to make our cheese with raw milk to create cheeses that have their own taste and by it they can indicate the region where thy come from. Doing so we will improve our biodiversity, creating products that wil be unique. VV, Swan View, Western Australia
  • Why is this still being debated? The rest of the world is still alive – despite centuries of eating raw milk cheese! Artisan makers should have the right to be able to develop raw milk products. Consumers should have the right to choose to buy raw milk products. SLH, Hawksburn, Victoria
  • Give our cheesemakers a chance to compete with the raw milk cheeses currently imported – level the playing field. Give Australian consumers the CHOICE to select appropriately labelled Australian raw milk cheese. RM, Frenchs Forest, NSW
  • Why import it when we can make it in our own country? Please give us the right to make the choice. FD, Pagewood, NSW
  • I fully support this petition and would urge those responsible for the food regulation in this wonderful country to apply reason to the issue of choice over the consumption of raw milk cheese. Whilst fully understanding the small risk from raw milk, I feel sure that with appropriate controls over the manufacturing and distribution processes, we can benefit from the huge advantages in taste and variety from the production of raw milk cheese. SG, Camberwell, Victoria
  • We do need to keep up with the rest of the world. Our artisan cheese industry has a real opportunity to develop as a strong industry and this is holding it back due to outdated and localised perceptions. JC, Uralba, NSW
